Sitting Too Long May Still Harm Health – Even if You Exercise

Prolonged sitting among people in an office

Meeting recommended exercise guidelines does not fully offset the health risks of prolonged sedentary behavior. A growing body of research indicates that extended periods of sitting can independently increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, metabolic dysfunction and premature mortality.

Researchers emphasize that total daily movement patterns matter, not just structured workouts. Fitness professionals can help clients reduce sedentary exposure by encouraging standing breaks, short walks and mobility exercises during the workday. Small changes may significantly influence long-term health outcomes with experts now recommending movement very 30-45 minutes.
