Exercise “Snacks” Continue to Gain Scientific Support
Short bouts of movement spread throughout the day are gaining credibility as a practical way to improve health. Researchers are increasingly studying “exercise snacks” – brief bursts of activity lasting from 30 seconds to a few minutes – to determine whether they can improve fitness and cardiometabolic markers in individuals who struggle to complete longer workouts.
Evidence suggests these micro-workouts can meaningfully improve cardiorespiratory fitness, insulin sensitivity and metabolic health when performed regularly. For busy clients or those intimidated by longer sessions, integrating small bursts of activity throughout the day such as climbing stairs, performing bodyweight squats or completing brisk walking intervals, may offer a realistic gateway to improved health.
