Fitness Industry Continues Growth

According to a monthly survey published by the International Health Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA), U.S. health clubs continue to flourish despite economic woes. The survey compared data collected in April 2009 and April 2010. “Year-to-date, total revenue, membership dues revenue, and non-dues revenue were about the same or better for the majority of respondents,” according to an IHRSA press release. More than half of the survey respondents anticipated that their revenues would increase in subsequent months.

The IHRSA Monthly Performance Index is based on revenue, number of membership accounts, number of employees, and capital expenditures on equipment. It also includes revenue expectations. “Year-to-date performance growth signifies a recovery and resilience from leading clubs surveyed in this sample,” said Melissa Rodriguez, research manager at IHRSA. “Club operators are anticipating further growth and are prepared to re-invest in their clubs.”
