Risk of Early Death and Celiac Disease
Celiac disease can raise the risk of early death from other conditions.
In a 1969–2017 study of 50,000 people with celiac disease in Sweden, researchers found that subjects had a 21% higher risk of early death from conditions like heart disease and cancer compared with the general population. This drives home the importance of a swift diagnosis, as well as the need to implement a strict gluten-free diet that still meets the overall nutrient needs of an individual with the condition.
