Color Therapy Primer
Every substance on earth contains color. Color stirs the emotions and affects our brains faster than speech or the written word. Each color affects our emotions differently because individual colors possess different light frequencies. Each frequency affects different parts of the brain. Very bright, intense hues stimulate the limbic system in the brain, which is directly linked to emotions. For example, anger may be associated with the color red. We are all familiar with some form of the common expression, “I saw red when I felt angry.”
Color can be stimulating or depressing, repulsive or attractive. Each color has its own unique healing and balancing properties and can stimulate deeper levels of consciousness. Using color vibration therapy is another wonderful tool to aid in the practice of being present. This practice of mindfulness allows you to become more aware of the subtle energetic changes in your body. What follows is a brief, basic overview of some common color characteristics.
Red
Red is the symbol of life and strength, courage, passion, love, earth and energy. Use the color red with discernment, as this vibrant color can be overpowering.
Orange
Orange stimulates creativity, vitality and sensuality. Visualizing orange can help with depression and brings joy and happiness.
Yellow
Yellow is a bright color that brings light and growth. It is empowering and helps with self definition. Visualize this color when engaging in physical activities.
Green
Green is the most relaxing color for the brain to interpret. Nature is covered with the many shades of green. It is a healing color, as it soothes the body, mind and spirit.
Blue
Blue represents truth, is cooling to body and mind, and is used to relax and help decrease blood pressure. Blue is an excellent interior home color that can enhance and quiet the mind.
