A Holistic Approach to Mental Health
Do you or someone you love struggle with mental illness? The good news is that exercise and mindfulness can help.

May is National Mental Health Awareness Month and fitness pros are an important link in helping people discover multiple paths to relief through a holistic approach.
The tie between physical activity and mental health has been well-established by research. Exercise has been shown to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, improve mood, and enhance cognitive function. In addition to the release of endorphins and other feel-good chemicals in the brain during exercise, regular movement can improve sleep quality (something we all could use more of!); reduce stress; and promote healthier eating—all of which can have a positive impact on mental well-being.
A holistic approach to mental health can include structured programs such as resistance training or running, as well as more casual activities like walking or gardening. The key is to help clients discover activities that are sustainable, enjoyable and habit forming. But there’s also the importance of social connection, mindfulness practices, breath control and other strategies for managing stress and promoting well-being. This comprehensive approach to mental health can help improve a client’s quality of life and reduce the risk of depression and anxiety.
What are some of your favorite approaches to fostering holistic mental health in yourself or with clients? Please share your ideas with me—I’d love to hear from you.
Free IDEA Webinar: Stroke Recovery Training
May is also Stroke Awareness Month. The American Stroke Association reports that stroke is the fifth-leading cause of death and a chief contributor to adult disability in the United States. While fitness pros can make a huge difference by helping their clients prevent risk factors that lead to stroke, rehabilitation is also a critical process to assist survivors in their return to better health and function.
If you’ve been wondering about specializing in stroke recovery, join us on Tuesday, May 16, at 10 AM Pacific for a free webinar with 2021 IDEA Personal Trainer of the Year and stroke rehab expert Tracy Markley.
Stroke recovery is a constantly evolving process. This webinar will provide insight on offering stroke recovery training as part of a client’s overall plan—particularly with focus on understanding the importance of your role as a post-rehab facilitator when physical therapy ends. You also will come away with enhanced understanding of what fitness professionals can gain by adding stroke recovery services to their business model.
Register for this webinar to explore the unique needs and challenges of stroke survivors so you can become a guiding force in their recovery. If you can’t make it, register and we’ll send you a link so you can attend independently.
