Member Spotlight – Desi Bartlett
A Career Rooted in Movement, Learning, and Leadership
For Desi, movement has never been just a job. It has been a throughline running consistently across education, leadership, and service for more than three decades. Born and raised in Chicago and now living in Kailua, Hawaii, her career reflects both depth of expertise and a continued curiosity about how fitness can support people through all stages of life.
Her professional path began in college, where an initial focus on communications shifted after discovering the gym during her sophomore year. That experience sparked a change in academic direction to kinesiology, eventually leading to a master’s degree in corporate fitness and later a doctorate in kinesiology. Like many fitness professionals, she started on the gym floor as a floor trainer, moving into personal training and group fitness instruction before expanding into broader leadership roles.
Those early experiences laid the foundation for executive positions with brands such as Equinox, Gaiam, and Manduka, and later for a career that blends education, media, and hands-on teaching.
A Multidisciplinary Approach to Fitness and Wellness
Today, Desi’s work spans yoga, fitness, and meditation through her signature BodyMind Workout®, an approach that integrates physical movement with mindfulness and breath. She teaches, presents, authors content, and leads teacher trainings and women’s wellness retreats internationally.
Her credentials reflect that breadth, including Certified Personal Trainer certification, Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT) status, Yoga Alliance Registered School designation, and a Doctorate in Kinesiology. Across all roles, her focus remains consistent: helping individuals reconnect with their strength physically, mentally, and emotionally.
She is particularly passionate about supporting women through major life transitions, including fertility, pregnancy, perimenopause, and beyond. Through books, digital platforms, and live education, she continues to translate science and lived experience into accessible, supportive practices.
What She Loves About Being a Fitness Professional
“What I love most about being a fitness professional is getting to witness people reconnect with their own strength,” Desi says. Movement, meditation, and community have been powerful tools in her own life, and she sees that same impact reflected in the people she works with every day.
For her, fitness is not only about physical capability but about helping people feel grounded, supported, and capable during times of change. Being part of that process remains the most meaningful aspect of her work.
The IDEA Connection
With more than 25 years of membership, Desi’s relationship with IDEA® Health & Fitness Association spans much of her professional life. She recalls attending conferences during the early days of step aerobics, long before the industry evolved into what it is today.
She joined IDEA to be part of a credible, forward-thinking community and has remained a member because of its emphasis on education, leadership, and connection. For her, IDEA represents a place where fitness professionals are encouraged to learn continuously and elevate one another, along with the communities they serve.
Beyond the Studio
Outside of her professional work, Desi enjoys spending time at the beach with her family, exploring Hawaii, traveling, and continuing to learn. Living on Oahu has deepened her appreciation for community, culture, and connection to place, influences that quietly inform her work and perspective.
✨ Fun Fact: Her career has taken her from gym floors to global retreats, but at its core, Desi’s work has always centered on helping people rediscover strength they already possess.
