Flu Prevention & Exercise
October signals the start of flu season, making prevention strategies essential for health and fitness enthusiasts. Moderate, consistent exercise has been shown to enhance immune system function and reduce the risk of illness. However, training too intensely during periods of high stress or inadequate rest can impair immune defenses (Campbell & Turner, 2018).
Flu vaccination remains the most effective preventive measure. Exercisers are encouraged to schedule their vaccine during lighter training days, as some may experience short-term fatigue. After vaccination, light activity such as stretching, walking, or mobility work supports recovery without overtaxing the body.
Hand hygiene, balanced nutrition, and adequate sleep provide added protection. A multi-layered approach—vaccination, smart exercise programming, and self-care—offers the best defense against seasonal illness.
