Organization Grants $1 Million to 1,000 Schools
In June, 1,000 U.S. schools were notified that they’d been awarded grants to improve physical activity levels among students. Each school will receive $1,000, provided by the Active Schools Acceleration Project.
Programs funded by the grants include the following:
- The 100 Mile Club, which challenges elementary school students to run, jog or walk 100 miles during the school year. Miles are logged during recess, sanctioned community events or during predetermined school time run hours.
- BOKS (Build Our Kids’ Success), a before-school program that encompasses structured play focused on aerobic activity, fun and teamwork.
- Just Move!, a program geared toward classroom-based physical activity.
“ASAP is increasing quality physical activity in America’s schools by identifying innovative solutions pioneered by everyday people, and empowering new schools with the tools and resources to replicate proven models,” according to the project’s website.
