Hi Stephanie. Congrats! I work with a lot of school-aged athletes as well (individuals, small groups and teams). If this is your first contact and proposal with this school, you may want to make it reasonably-priced to give them (and you) an opportunity to see and show your stuff! I would consider pricing it slightly below your ‘market’ price for a small group of similar size, and let them know in your proposal that you are providing this ‘initial service’ at a slightly reduced rate (that way, if they/and you decide to continue or expand beyond your initial 6-8 weeks, you have the ABILITY – but not the OBLIGATION to raise your rates to your ‘normal’ rate or not.
Most public schools have a fairly limited budget, so by offering a slight discount, you may peak their interest. If this is a private school, their situation may be a little different.
I hope that this helps and good luck to you!
I have been charging my standard fee for a constructed class of less than 15, + mileage. The class is actually 20+ but I do it for less to help the school and because I really enjoy it. If you do this on a trial basis, I suggest giving the fee you intend to charge and not a discounted “trial” fee. Not that its bad marketing but if its on a trial basis, they are going to be looking for reasons to justify that price. When the price is known, it appears to be a standard professional fee for a guaranteed professional service. Basically, if you give a discount, then keep it. If you don’t and they won’t cover it, then its because your time must be more valuable and they couldn’t afford you (at this point you can negotiate something suitable). When it comes to working with schools I’ve found it to be more effective to give a set price up front so they can work it into their budget in the future. If they don’t like your sevice, they simply won’t ask you back.
Hello Stephanie Gardner,
I charged a group rate per person for a group session. The bottom line is what makes you and your customers happy at the end of the day. Be yourself without taking advantage. You should have a price schedule figured out ahead of time for situations like this. I treat all group sessions the same. Consistency is professional and helps everyone involved. The going rate is different for every area.
What did you end up doing?
