Hi Joan,
I assume that the classes are offered free to members of your club because else you would know that number. I also assume that you track the number of participants per class.
Maybe the best would be a member survey where member can indicate the importance they attach to each of the services you offer. I would 'sell' the survey as a way to serve the members better. A question could be to ask what services your members are actually using. Another could be to sort your services in order of importance (I would allow equal ranking). Yet another question could be whether there is anything the members are not using at all.
While none of that will leave you with an actual number it will give you an idea of the value your members attach to your classes.
In order to motivate people to actually take the survey, I would offer a drawing among the participants; eg. three months free membership. A water bottle will not do it.
Good luck.

Karin i believe I asked this a little bit messy. Here is what I do now. I have memberships where they pay a monthly fee for taking classes & for the most part those members take an average 3 classes per week. I also have an annual membership as well that members can take classes. If you average that out per class it does not come to much per class maybe $5 & for annual memberships its even less. Taking all that information into account paying the instructors that teach them & utility costs etc. is how I figure things out, so I am not sure if this is the correct way or is there a better strategy? Thank you!

Hi Joan,
thanks for the extra information.
Am I correct in understanding that you offer memberships just for taking classes and not for utilizing other parts of your facility? In that case, our calculation would be correct since you can link the membership fee directly to the classes.
I have never seen such a set-up. Typically, clubs charge a general membership where most classes are included in addition to other club services.

We offer our memberships gym/classes or just gym alone, so members can do both or just use the gym. The majority of members that utilize the “with classes” membership mostly just take classes. Basically it’s the same as what you are used to clubs charging. We used to have the one rate like your used to hearing of but members would complain that they didn’t want classes & why should we have to pay the same rate so we increased the rate on people that take classes. Hope that makes sense.
Honestly I just wanted to compare how I charge for my classes to what other club owners do.

It's an interesting concept. Many club owners would argue that it may be a challenge to ensure compliance. That may depend on the size of the membership of your club.
At present, I only teach at a studio where people pay per class with payment options of one-time drop-in to a 50-class package. This studio is highly specialized with an array of mind/body modalities.

Hello Joan Thompson,
It sounds like your calculations are correct. You may need to charge more or have the clients pay per class attended. You could also charge a group rate of so many sessions in advance with a discount. The long term membership fee may not be the way to go. I like how you accommodate your clientele.
Thank you,
Natalie

Hi Natalie,
Thanks for your answer. I am assuming that you are talking about the yearly memberships that include the classes. Perhaps the monthly membership only for classes would make more sense.

If people pay more for group-ex memberships than equipment memberships, you could add up the money for group-ex memberships to come up with your revenue piece. We used to have a $9.95 membership for just the gym and $19.95 for gym and classes. So we knew exactly what the group-ex was worth and who was buying it.
Then for your costs, you could allocate your rent and other indirect items based on square footage, and the director cost of instructor expenses, payroll taxes.
