Can you please explain proper progression for a cardio program, stages, etc.

I strongly suggest that you take the CEC program Cardio for Fitness from NASM http://shop.nasm.org/p-43-cardio-for-fitness-v2.aspx which explains the suggested process beautifully. Just completed it myself. It operates within the framework of the OPT model and lays out progression for a wide variety of athletes, not only those traditionally considered endurance athletes.
