It’s always nice to combine both nutrition and exercise into a weight loss program whenever possible, but that doesn’t mean you can’t lose the weight if exercise isn’t an option. In fact, the largest percentage of weight loss is a result of a well-structured diet. Yes, exercise will give you an added benefit of burning calories and building muscle, but it doesn’t compare to what can be achieved through proper nutrition. Given your symptoms and limitations that occur with the neuropathy, I would focus on your nutrition first and perhaps incorporate some beginner resistance training, using bands while in a seated position. You may want to speak with your doctor about your options and perhaps he can refer you to a registered dietitian. It is possible that as you lose weight you may find improvement in your medical condition which will allow you more exercise options down the road.
Best of luck to you!
my colleagues made some good suggestions. The one thing I like to add is my experience with clients with neuropathy. There is such a thing as the MELT Foot Treatment, and you may get relief through it for your neuropathy. As I said, I have had success with clients doing just that, and that may enable you to be more active and thus add to your weight loss success.
I know you want to stay home, but unless you have swimming pool or are willing/able to afford an “endless pool”, I recommend going to a local rec center or municipal pool and doing aquatic exercise. There is no better exercise for people with issues such as yours. Are you feet in good condition otherwise? Be careful with cuts and abrasions when you do any type of exercise. Be sure to tell your doctor of your plans as well.
Hi Rebecca, I would certainly agree with my colleagues that sorting out a proper nutritional plan would be the first place to start. Look up a local dietician or nutritional therapist to help you with this.
For your fitness, engaging the services of a personal trainer will pay real dividends as he/she will be able to meet with you and do a full assessment of your needs and also be able to advise you on your nutritional needs.
I wish you the best of luck
