How do I get a job as a Group fitness instructor?
That should not be too difficult because health clubs are forever on the search for instructors. However, you need to be prepared to offer a variety of formats so that you are of greater value to a club.
If I were you, I would just call around. You will be, in all probability, a part-time employee without any benefits. You may also initially only be used as a substitute unless they have an open slot that needs a permanent instructor.
But even if they no not need somebody right now, I am sure clubs will like to know that you are available and will get back with you when they have an opening.
Hi Jenny,
You could apply to be a part-time group instructor as I consistently see listings for that position. I know I personally had to demonstrate my value by teaching a few classes in front of the owner. Once you’re hired, you can quickly gain exposure and credibility with various clients of the gym.
The other option is creating your own job as an independent trainer. If you feel that you have a style of training that is unique and effective and possess an alluring personality, people will gravitate towards you. It may be difficult at first to start your own class but it is very rewarding and earning potential is limitless. I started my own boot camp by training my own friends. Word quickly spread and now I have a consistent client-base.
If you’re a good instructor and deliver results, you should have not problem succeeding in getting a job as a fitness instructor!

Audition, audition, audition! Most clubs are always looking for instructors, even if it is just to add to a sub roster for starters, the more you sub, the better your chances are of getting your own class. It takes time, and you have to “pay your dues” in many cases (ie: teaching classes in less-than-desirable time slots, with lower attendance, in smaller studios, etc.).
Hi Jenny. I think that there is ALWAYS a need for good group ex instructors, particularly if the instructor can be creative and design new class formats and classes. Drop by local gyms, offer to be listed as a substitute instructor, offer new classes not already listed on their Group Ex class schedule. I think that both of these proactive steps will help you find a job quickly.
I hope that this helps.
