Personal I love gloves. Not only do they help prevent you from getting calluses, but gloves with wrist wraps help provide stability to the wrist. This is especially great for me as I have fractured both my left and right wrist playing football. I do have clients and colleagues who prefer not to wear gloves, but some who do. As LaRue said, "they can be either a help or hindrance". The type of glove will also matter as they have some for general fitness which are less bulky and provide basic covering or you can get into the weightlifting type of glove which can come with wrist wraps and more cushioning in the palm area. Some popular brands are Harbinger, Altus, Schiek, and Valeo. Depending on the use there are alternatives such as chalk, lifting straps, and exercise grips (covers palm only).

I have them, and use them, when lifting dumbbells & barbells. I find they give me a better grip as well as preventing calluses and giving a little cushioning on my palms.

I use them only when lifting heavy weights or doing pull-ups. I have small hands and I feel more secure with the grip that my workout gloves provide as I begin to sweat.

I have them for my hands and my feet! :) I wear gloves when I train because I don't like calluses, and I feel they give me a better grip. I also love the Five Finger barefoot shoes to train in, as I like to be on level ground when I work out, rather than having to fight a pair of running type shoes to keep my heels flat when lifting.

It is definitely a personal preference, if you enjoy having pretty hands that are soft without any calluses I would suggest that you wear them. When I was younger I used gloves more but that was when I was into keeping my hand pretty.

I always wear them. I firmly believe they help grip the barbell and dumbells into my hands....especially when I perspire/sweat.

I wear them always. They set the stage, keep my grip on, and allow me to have soft hands.

I sometimes use them to help with gripping a bar or a weight. A few at the gym are so rough they are brutal on my hands. I wear Men's Harbinger gloves. I also have Women's Nike, but they are shorter in the fingers and don't protect my hands as much. I'm tall and have long fingers so the Men's gloves offer better protection for me.

Quite a bit of glove love in here! If I am lifting heavy I might chalk up but only for deadlifts. I really think gloves are mainly good for preventing calluses. It all boils down to personal preference. While gloves can make it easier to grip the bar, they are also a hindrance for anyone who actually wants to develop their grip strength. This is a must for anyone looking to get stronger. I think they actually provide a false sense of grip strength, and that is one big negative to using them. I don't waste a lot of time trying to convince clients not to wear them though, some people just like using them.

I use mine all the time. I used to get callouses under my fingers and now that I use the gloves I don't have them any more. Plus, if you are doing a circuit and your hands get sweaty (as mine often do) then its easier to grip a weight with the gloves on.

I love the Wags brand of fingerless gloves useful for yoga and Pilates floor work. I have carpal tunnel and the raised gel pads on the heel of the hand has been life changing as to what exercises I can re-incorporate for myself. You also don't lose as much class time adjusting props to help the wrists. I love them and have used the same pair for 5 years.

I haven't used any in years. When I first started weight training, everybody had them, so I got them, too. But I just do not like the way they feel.

I have two clients (a husband and wife) who swear by them, and wouldn't work out without them :-) Of course, when we work on exercises requiring manual dexterity, they have to take them off (so in those cases I guess you can call them a hindrance). So, the long and short of it is that they can be either a help or hindrance; it will depend on what you're doing at the time, AND perhaps more importantly whether the person using them sees them as a help or hindrance (after all, "perception can be reality").
I hope that this helps.

I have a couple of pairs, but am not married to using them. I do recommend sometimes for certain female clients, based mostly on the workouts we go through. I see some guys come in with gloves with straps, hand clothes (yeah) and paper towels. To each his/her own on that one, as long as you can handle the load or it protects your hands.

I'm with Jim Lyons on this one. Chalk is the way to go. Gloves are ok if you are really trying to prevent rough hands. They absolutely give you a false sense of grip strength.
