IDEA Celebrates 30 Years!
When your business is older than your adult children and your children now work in the business with you, you know a few years have passed! But where did the time go? It’s fantastic to look back at the three exciting decades that have dramatically changed the world in general—and also to view them through the lens of what it means to be healthy today.
The credit belongs to you and IDEA’s community of dedicated professionals who have led our mission to Inspire the World to Fitness®. Your conviction, hard work and determination have changed millions of lives around the planet—and we think the revolution has only just begun.
Our industry’s future is brighter than ever. Fitness is rapidly evolving into a more integrated, balanced continuum of wholeness that merges body, mind and inspiration. You are not only defining the change that is shaping our future; you are the change. You are the future. Your knowledge is the supporting framework that builds up your clients, but your hearts and creative minds are the driving force that brings them to lasting achievement.
We have many excellent plans to reveal this year in all aspects of the association—our publications, our fitness conference programming and our online offerings, including IDEA FitnessConnect, where you will see enhancements that we know you’ll just love. Join us as we celebrate you and this life-changing industry all year.
In this issue you will see a few changes to kick off the celebration. First, note our 30th anniversary logo, which was created expressly to commemorate the occasion. This year, you’ll see it on all IDEA collateral material in place of the usual logo; but, more specifically, you’ll find it on editorial material that pertains specifically to our 30th anniversary. This month, you can see it both on the cover of the magazine and on the “Your Vision for the Future of Fitness” spread. This article highlights the winning concepts from a contest we announced at the 2011 IDEA World Fitness Convention™ and in the September issue of IDEA Fitness Journal. We invited you to submit your industry vision for the next 30 years. We applaud all of you for sharing your passion in writing, and we congratulate the winners of the contest, featured on pp. 50–51.
Next, you’ll notice that the internal graphic design of IDEA Fitness Journal has received something of a facelift. We wanted to step into the next decade with a fresh new look, and we present it here for the first time. Our editors and designers collaborated for months to achieve a more modern, open and airy feel for your reading ease and pleasure. The objective was to open things up and try not to pile onto the bombardment of information we must all sort through in the Information Age. Let our editor know what you think: [email protected] We look forward to getting your feedback, and we will continue to fine-tune the design throughout 2012.
On a final note, we want to point you to a special feature in this issue that urges you to learn more about fresh, seasonal ingredients and basic cooking skills and to seriously pursue this avenue with your clients. You can expend blood, sweat and tears on exercising the body, but it’s pretty useless unless what’s going into that body is pure and balanced. Read “Fast-Food Fallacy” by editor in chief Sandy Todd Webster and note her sidebar interview with Iron Chef commentator and cookbook author Alton Brown, whom she interviewed last October at the 2011 Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival. Alton wants you to get into the kitchen with your clients and “cook smart.”
Happy New Year to all of you. We hope 2012 is a banner year for you!
Yours in health,
Kathie & Peter Davis
