5. Professional Athletes Who Endorse Junk Food Send a Mixed Message
In 2010 top U.S. athletes endorsed 62 food products, 49 of which were high in calories and low in nutritional content, according to this Reuters article. The piece reviews a study which found that when athletes endorse junk food it sends a mixed message to children. In the article, Emma Boyland, a professor from the University of Liverpool, says that when athletes promote such products, it “lends an aura of healthfulness to these foods and beverages they don’t deserve.” The piece suggests that parents talk to their kids about the purpose of marketing and advertising to decrease the impact of these ads.
