Weight-related bias and stigma in physical activity (PA) settings can lead to PA avoidance and adverse health outcomes. The fitness professional’s role is to create environments that promote inclusion for all individuals regardless of weight status. This session will identify the consequences of weight-related bias and stigma in the fitness industry and review common misconceptions about PA for individuals who are overweight or obese. Current research on best practices for fostering an inclusive and empathetic exercise environment, including using person-first language and approaches for addressing weight bias and stigma in a fitness setting, will be included.
