Health ministers from 53 countries approved the world’s first anti-obesity charter in November. The charter was drafted by the World Health Organization in consultation with its European member states, according to a Yahoo! News report. The document’s aim is to curb obesity in the next 5 years and reverse the trend by 2015. The article cites obesity as being responsible for up to 6% of all health costs across Europe.

More and more people are reaching the 100-year mark, according to researchers and demographers. While fewer people live to be 110, scientists are very interested in studying their lifestyle habits. The Supercentenarian Research Foundation, based in Pittsburgh, was set up to fight the effects of aging and improve the quality of life for the very old. Yahoo! News reports that researchers also want to know why some people live longer than others and what the limit of the human lifespan is. Combat fighters are under a great deal of physical and
psychological stress. Regardless of circumstances, they must be able to perform optimally. A study from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences has set out to measure war fighters’ physical and psychological well-being with the goals of avoiding “the deleterious consequences
of fatigue” and potentially reducing injury risk.

Phase one of the study determined how metabolic profiles can predict performance, fatigue, metabolic stress and recovery rates for individuals undergoing extreme exertion. The second phase will (1)
analyze and profile compositional and quantitative changes in plasma metabolites that may indicate tissue or metabolic changes and (2) seek evidence of physiological stress during physical activity. By measuring combatants’ metabolic profiles, researchers hope to help improve training programs, dietary guidance and therapeutic interventions.
