Want to know what programs and offerings are expected to grow this year? Based on information gathered from 10,000 fitness facilities, industry research and consumer wellness behavior, the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IRHSA) offers its 2011 list of trends for fitness facilities. Here are some highlights:

  • Cross-Promotion and Niche-Specific Facilities. In order to enhance relationships with active members, fitness facilities will increasingly offer workshops on functional training for sports. More facilities are specializing in specific niches such as rock climbing and martial arts.
  • Wellness Programming. Fast-paced lifestyles and mounting stress contribute to the increased demand for wellness programs, both in fitness facilities and in the workplace. These services include partnerships with healthcare providers, workplace wellness facilities, personal training for special medical populations and nutrition coaching.
  • Growth in Group Offerings. Participation in group exercise activities continues to grow. From 2008 to 2009, cardio kickboxing increased 20%, high-impact aerobics was up 8.1%, low-impact was up 6.3% and step aerobics was up 4.5%.
