Older adults suffering from mild cognitive impairment may be able to enhance their ability to function by drinking more Concord grape juice, according to a study published in the December 23, 2009, issue of the British Journal of Nutrition.
Concord grape juice contains
antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds that influence brain signals. Previous studies have shown that Concord grape juice can reduce blood pressure and inflammation in older adults who have mild cognitive
impairments, while also improving memory and motor function.
This randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial followed up on a small group of older adults with mild memory decline (but not dementia) who were given Concord grape juice supplementation for 3 months.
“We observed significant improvement in a measure of verbal learning and nonsignificant enhancement of verbal and spatial recall [in subjects given the juice],” the researchers concluded. “These preliminary findings suggest that supplementation with Concord grape juice may enhance cognitive function for older adults with early memory decline.”
