The Brain Emporium, a brain exercise center founded and directed by T.J. McCallum, associate professor of psychology at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, opened at the Fairhill Center in Cleveland in March 2009. The Brain Emporium is another example of the growing popularity of computer-based mental fitness games.
McCallum and his graduate student assistants design individualized training programs using original computer software, the Nintendo Wii and other gaming systems. The Brain Emporium’s programs challenge memory, visual-spatial abilities, mental flexibility, processing speed, language and planning. An important component of the program is
encouraging social interaction among participants.
Editor’s Note: The National Institutes of Health Mind & Body Week, mentioned in last month’s column, was canceled.
