Take some time now to develop a strategy for emphasizing food education next month during the 40th anniversary of National Nutrition Month. The theme, “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day,” encourages personalized healthy eating styles (based on 2010 Dietary Guidelines recommendations and MyPlate messages) and recognizes that food preferences, lifestyle, cultural and ethnic traditions, and health concerns all impact individual food choices.

Registered dietitians can play an important role in helping people eat right. Make a concerted effort to identify a few dietitians who fit your philosophy, and solidify your referral relationship with them as your partners in client education. Why not invite a local RD to come and present to your clients on “Healthy Recipes for Busy Families” or “Powerful, Healthy Snack Ideas”? Start crosstalk to bridge the gap in your scope of practice and to maximize the professional resources you can offer your clients. It’s a natural opportunity for referrals—for both professions.
