Juicy melons are synonymous with the start of summer. They travel well to picnics, are beloved by children and adults alike and are the perfect solution for those with a sweet tooth.

Health Benefits. With their high water content, melons are refreshing but low in calories. They are also a good source of potassium and vitamin C. Here’s a look at a few of the myriad varieties of melons now appearing on grocery shelves:

  • Watermelon contains more water than any other variety. Select fruit that is firm, smooth and unblemished. It should sound hollow when knocked.
  • Cantaloupe, when ripe, should have a strong, sweet,
almost floral scent, and should give slightly when pressed.
  • Honeydew is perhaps the sweetest of all melons. The
honeydew has a sugary taste that makes it a good snack when paired with a little low-fat cottage cheese. Choose melons with a freckled rind, an indication of sweetness.

Storing Melons. Always store whole melons at room temperature, as refrigeration may negatively affect the fruit’s
texture. Once sliced or cut, melons should be covered tightly
in plastic wrap or placed in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
