Do you want to infuse some holiday spirit into your group fitness schedule this winter season? Here are some unique and festive class ideas sure to create a jolly atmosphere in your fitness facility:

  • Jingle Bell Mingle. Courtesy of IDEA presenter Krista Popowych, this 60- to 75-minute class is taught by several volunteer instructors and includes a variety of formats. Participants receive bells for their shoelaces upon entrance. The instructors wear holiday colors and festive hats. After class, participants may enjoy beverages and snacks. “In addition,” says Popowych, “we have a shoe drive in which we collect shoes that go to the less fortunate.”
  • Cycle Ride to the North Pole. At the Bay Club/Bank of America Center in San Francisco, members are treated to a winter-themed class where participants “brave snowdrifts, wind and rough terrain” on the way to the North Pole. As an added bonus, a DJ spins “his own brand of holiday music.”
  • Fitness Gift Exchange. This idea comes to us courtesy of IDEA author and presenter Shannon Fable. Before class, participants receive a number. Randomly during class, the instructor calls a number. While others grab water and a quick rest, the person with that number must choose a wrapped “gift” with a challenge inside. An example might be 25 burpees. The participant accepts and fulfills the challenge, or rejects it by calling out another number. Whoever has that second number must complete the challenge when class resumes.
