Creative Classes That Inspire

Remember to keep the “group” in group fitness with engaging ideas.

Gunning on the Krankcycle® is being offered at select Crunch Fitness locations. Suunto Fitness Solution and Krankcycle partnered to offer a unique iteration of the class, which displays participants’ real-time heart rate data on a screen below each person’s name, highlighted by a color code related to the individual’s current percentage of maximum heart rate. This color-coded system helps instructors lead a more effective workout by recognizing which energy systems their students are using. Each Krankcycle participant receives an e-mail or printed report that includes a heart rate graph, time in zones, peak and average heart rates, total calories burned and more.

BodyWeb With TRX System® is another class Crunch offers in select locations. The online description says participants hang from ropes to “push, pull, lift and lower” their bodies through Spiderman-like moves for a “total body suspension workout that also super-strengthens [the] core.”

Revolution Fitness in Santa Monica, California, gets its members moving as a team with Indo-Row™, a class that uses rowing machines. “Using all major muscle groups, the cardiovascular system and the mind, Indo-Row is a leg-, core- and arm-toning workout that synchronizes everyone as a team, is easy to learn and delivers big results,” according to the class description on the Revolution Fitness website. A sister strength class uses circuits and incorporates 30 minutes of rowing with 30 minutes of weight training.

Drums are inspirational and bring people together. People who understand this have created fun classes for a wide variety of participants. Rhythm Gym combines movement and drumming in an environment that also “promotes teamwork, socializing, healthy lifestyles and fun.” FitRhythms™, created by Paulo Mattioli, integrates dance and drumming. The mind-body wellness program combines live drumming and dance into “an effective workout.” Boom! Total Rhythm classes use tall, standing drums, combinations of fitness and dance moves, stretching, clapping and chanting “to deliver a mid-impact aerobic workout.” No prior experience with drumming is necessary for any of these rhythm-based classes.

The Grace Somatomorphic Technique (GST™) is an “exercise system” that teaches five foundational movements that participants learn and practice in “rigorous 60-minute classes,” which are taught using spring-loaded equipment and choreography. A press release describes the class both as an “evolution of Pilates” and as a “Pilates-yoga-capoeria hybrid.” n
