Fresh Produce Isn’t Always More Nutritious

Tips for handling frozen food safety

Frozen fruits and vegetables are often harvested near peak ripeness and quickly frozen, helping preserve many of the nutrients present at harvest. Fresh produce, meanwhile, can spend days traveling, sitting on store shelves and waiting in the refrigerator before it reaches the plate.

That means frozen produce shouldn’t automatically be viewed as the nutritional consolation prize when fresh isn’t available. Cost, convenience, reduced food waste and year-round availability can make the freezer aisle a practical way to increase fruit and vegetable intake.
