October Is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

by Diane Lofshult on Oct 01, 2003

This year marks the 18th anniversary of the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) campaign. Fitness professionals can use this occasion to get the word out to their female clients about the importance of regular breast examinations and mammography screening.

Each year, the third Friday in October is designated National Mammography Day. This year, that day falls on October 17. Both on this day and throughout the month, some radiologists will be providing free or discounted mammography screening. Last year, more than 680 American College of Radiology accredited facilities took part in this initiative, according to the NBCAM Web site (www.nbcam.org).

To learn which facilities in your area are taking part in this event, contact these organizations:

  • American Cancer Society, (800) 227-2345

  • National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations, (888) 80-NABCO

  • Y-Me National Breast Cancer Organization, (800) 221-2141
