2007 IDEA World Fitness Convention® & 25th Anniversary Celebration:
If you want to know what the future of health and fitness holds and how to prepare for it, the 2007 IDEA World Fitness Convention is where you need to be.

This July, the global fitness community is coming together to celebrate a quarter-century of hard work and progress in its mission to create a healthier world. The location is sunny San Diego, where IDEA was born 25 years ago, and the theme is “Celebrate the Past—Inspire the Future,” a reflection of the fitness event’s twofold aim: to honor IDEA members’ remarkable accomplishments and to pave the way for future success with an extraordinary education program.

“We’ve put together more new programs and hot topics than we’ve ever had” says Aprile Peishel, MA, director of fitness event programming for IDEA. “We wanted to pull out all the stops for the 25th anniversary. And there are so many exciting new directions in the industry right now—we wanted to make sure they were all represented.”

While IDEA is known for its diverse, high-quality programming, this year’s convention features more new, edgy and out-of-the-box programs than ever before, with everything from hip-hop and martial arts to surfing and boot camp training, along with more than 300 of the leading group exercise, personal training and business sessions presented by the world’s top instructors and advanced-degree faculty. Gyrotonic® exercise is just one of the high-profile programs that will be offered for the first time at the fitness event. In fact, 145 new sessions, or 45% of the program, will be first-time offerings.

Laughter, Fun and Looking Back

This year’s convention also puts more focus on fun, adventure, humor, making friends and sharing memories than any past fitness event. It’s all part of the party atmosphere designed to make sure you have the time of your life. For example, the opening ceremonies (including the presentation of the IDEA Health & Fitness Awards) will have a special master of ceremonies this year: touring professional comedian—and former Marine, bodybuilder and personal trainer—Tim Wilkins promises to keep the laughter coming from the moment the convention begins.

“I know our industry and lifestyle like no other comedian,” says Wilkins. “I love comedy and fitness, and it was a natural chain of events that led me to start noticing all the funny things about it. Let’s face it: the way we think can be very funny. If you’ve ever heard that someone cheated and you immediately thought it was on their diet, this is the show for you!”

Beginning with the opening festivities, you’ll make new memories and relive a few old ones as you join world-renowned leaders in taking an irreverent look back at how far the industry has come. The big bash will be the 25th anniversary party, “Celebrate in Silver,” a glittering gala tribute to the history of IDEA and fitness, with entertainment, dancing and a light buffet. For more fun, you won’t want to miss the special 25th anniversary-inspired sessions, which include three panels on the future of the industry, plus fun, retro-style workouts: “Bringing It Back!” “Dance Totally ’80s,” “Step Celebration!” and, finally, “It’s a Wrap! A 25th Anniversary Celebration Workout” with Kathy Smith and the IDEA 2007 presenter team.

Looking Forward: The Fitness-to-Wellness Revolution

The convention’s keynote speaker will be renowned economist and best-selling author Paul Zane Pilzner, who will talk about his latest book, The New Wellness Revolution (Wiley 2007), and the role that fitness professionals can play in the rapidly growing wellness economy, projected to reach $1 trillion just 5 years from now. Pilzner is acclaimed as one of the most successful, forward-thinking business visionaries in the world—and he will outline the challenges and rewards that lie ahead for the fitness industry, along with the myths and mistakes that instructors and trainers need to avoid if they want to carve out a successful niche in the wellness marketplace.

This year’s convention offers a greatly expanded program of wellness, coaching and body-mind sessions, as part of the industry’s continual evolution toward a broader, more integrated approach to health. In addition to a wide array of yoga, tai chi and other sessions focusing on the fusion of body, mind and spirit, there will be an Inner IDEA all-day preconference workshop, extensive Pilates training and equipment availability, and ongoing access to Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis® equipment and training.

“There has been tremendous growth in the fitness industry over the last 25 years,” says presenter Lorna Francis, PhD, CLC, who brings 30 years of experience as a university professor, author, speaker and life coach to the inspirational sessions she will present at the conference. “The inclusion of mind-body principles and coaching skills in fitness and wellness programs empowers people to take full responsibility for the outcome of their health and well-being. It encourages clients to look within and fine-tune what is most important to them and their overall well-being. This approach is going to become increasingly more important as the healthcare needs of our aging population become a major social and financial concern.”

More InTensive Training and In-Depth Preconference Workshops

The 2007 IDEA World Fitness Convention will feature more opportunities for in-depth education, including six 4-hour InTensive sessions (back by popular demand after being introduced last year) that combine concentrated, cutting-edge information and research with hands-on training from leading experts. Attendees at InTensive sessions receive a certificate of completion.

You’ll also have the chance to participate in a rigorous boot camp aboard an aircraft carrier and to try your hand at “iron chef”–style cooking competitions. Here are your ultimate adventure choices:

Adventure training is just one of the ways you’ll find at the convention to push past limiting boundaries in your life and career.

“It is so exciting to be a part of the tidal wave of creativity and passion in the fitness industry right now,” says Misty Tripoli, creator of the Body Groove Method, who is presenting the session “Yoga Groove—Live Drums.” “I can’t wait to share my passion for dance, yoga, meditation and creative expression at the upcoming convention in San Diego. Let’ s come together to relax the mind, free the body and dance with the soul. Are you ready to get your groove on? See you there!”
