by Mary Monroe on Mar 16, 2010

This year the world’s biggest blockbuster fitness event “goes Hollywood” with 5 full days of education, entertainment and fun.

Welcome to Hollywood . . . and the 2010 IDEA World Fitness Convention! Make your plans now to join the excitement at the industry’s largest and longest-running fitness convention. It’s all happening for the first time at the world-famous L.A. LIVE entertainment complex in the heart of Los Angeles, site of the American Music Awards, the ESPYs, the EMMYs and the American Idol finals.

“This year’s convention is going to be our biggest ever, and we’re excited to be at a location that’s brand-new for us, L.A. LIVE, the new entertainment and sports district in Los Angeles,” says Kathie Davis, co-founder of IDEA Health & Fitness Association. “We’re going to have lots of surprises and special features, so our members will get great value for their travel dollars—they can invest in their career and their future, and also enjoy a wonderful vacation with their families. We’re adding more entertainment and fun this year, so it’s going to be a really novel experience, even for members who have attended IDEA World Fitness Convention before.”

The primary focus of the convention, now in its 26th year: to continue IDEA’s mission of inspiring the world to fitness and wellness. “Our message is more important than ever, with obesity, inactivity, unhealthy nutrition, and stress threatening the health of so many millions of people around the world,” says Davis. “Every one of our members has the opportunity to inspire people in their community to get up and move, to become more active, to make healthier choices. This convention is where fitness and wellness professionals from around the globe come together to share their ideas—share their hope for the future—and get inspired themselves to work even harder for a healthier world.”

Red Carpet of Fitness

The 2010 IDEA World Fitness Convention is your chance to share the red carpet with the biggest names in fitness and participate in over 350 educational sessions on the hottest topics in the industry. You’ll get an insider’s look at the newest and most exciting programs, trends, research and equipment presented by 150 top personalities and leading experts in the fields of health, fitness and wellness.

Pack your party outfits, because the annual IDEA World Fitness Awards Show will be held Thursday night at the Nokia Theatre, home of the Emmys and many other glittering awards shows. You will have a chance to walk the same red carpet the celebrities do to make your entrance to the fitness event. Once inside, we promise, you will be entertained and inspired. On top of that, one lucky attendee will win a vacation to the world-famous Golden Door spa!

Come and congratulate the winners of the 2010 IDEA World Fitness Awards for Personal Trainer of the Year; Fitness Instructor of the Year; and Program Director of the Year. Hear about the amazing achievements of this year’s recipient of the IDEA Fitness Inspiration Award, and be a part of the presentation of the prestigious IDEA Leadership Award.

Regina Benjamin, MD, the U.S. Surgeon General, in partnership with First Lady Michelle Obama and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, has announced plans to help Americans lead healthier lives through better nutrition and regular physical activity and by encouraging communities to support healthy choices. In her first communication to the nation since being sworn in as the Surgeon General, Dr. Benjamin released The Surgeon General’s Vision for a Healthy and Fit Nation. In it, she outlines her vision and plan to combat the alarming trend of overweight and obesity among Americans.

As an industry, we now have a voice at the highest levels of the United States government and a champion for our cause. For her leadership in this critical area, which directly impacts each of us and our industry, and which showcases our connected talents to Inspire the World to Fitness®, IDEA will present the 2010 IDEA Leadership Award to Dr. Benjamin.

Adding to the excitement, the host for the evening will be TV star Mario Lopez, who has authored two fitness books, Mario Lopez’s Knockout Fitness (Rodale 2008) and Extra Lean (Celebra 2010). One of the most well-known personalities on television and an avid fan of fitness, dance and sports, Lopez is host of Extra, the second-longest-running entertainment-magazine program on television, and one of MTV’s highest-rated programs, America’s Best Dance Crew.

After the inspiration and recognition at the IDEA World Fitness Awards Show, it will be time to celebrate at the after-party on the Nokia Plaza! This will be a great time to connect with old friends and make new acquaintances as you experience one of L.A.’s hottest entertainment destinations, L.A. LIVE. Drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be served as we dance to music by a top L.A. DJ.

An Expanded 5-Day Event

This year’s convention has been extended to include 5 full days of fitness education (make your travel plans accordingly). The Wednesday-through-Sunday convention schedule begins 1 day earlier this year with a new full day (Wednesday) of Premier Seminar training—15 courses of in-depth specialty education brought to you by IDEA and the leading companies in fitness.

The intensive Premier Seminars are designed to increase your professional skills, client effectiveness, market appeal, career success and profitability. The courses offer comprehensive, in-depth training in Pilates, yoga, indoor cycling, Zumba®, sports conditioning, mixed martial arts, career development and integrated fitness training. (For more on the seminars, see pages 52–53.)

Wednesday evening will include a ribbon-cutting celebration ceremony in the IDEA Fitness & Wellness Expo Hall. This brand-new event will feature celebrities, prizes and surprises—and attendees will increase their chances of winning a Golden Door vacation (the winner will be announced at the IDEA World Fitness Awards Show on Thursday).

More Education Than Ever Before

As the world of fitness continues to expand and diversify, so does the curriculum at the IDEA World Fitness Convention, which offers a larger selection of fitness education sessions and workshops than any other fitness event in the world.

IDEA’s faculty of leading fitness and wellness educators will explore the latest ideas, equipment, choreography, research, methods and programs that will shape the global future of health and fitness. Whether you’re an experienced pro or just considering a new career in fitness, education is available to help you advance your knowledge, build your business or get started on a new professional path. Sessions will include a wide range of topics and expert perspectives in these areas:

Personal Training Specialties. This is your chance to deepen your specialty or broaden your training skills in a variety of targeted areas. Choose from small-group training, boot camp, corrective exercise, functional training, core training, assessment and much more.

Group Exercise. The program includes progressive, high-energy group exercise programs for all levels of expertise. Offerings include dance, cardio, choreography, circuit, interval training and other great sessions. We have added a new choreography key this year to help you choose the right level for you.

Mind-Body, Pilates and Yoga. If you are a mind-body fitness professional, you won’t want to miss this fitness conference within a conference! Choose from more than 60 sessions to find the programming that suits your specific needs. IDEA has assembled some of the most respected experts in the mind-body realm to deliver this groundbreaking education for fitness pros who are passionate about wellness of body, mind and spirit.

Hybrid Fitness Professionals. As a hybrid fitness professional who trains clients one-on-one and also teaches classes, you need to get “double value” from your convention experience. That’s why we have devoted a special column in our session grid to help you select the classes that are specifically geared to fitness professionals like you who dare to do it all.

Making Money and Developing Your Career as a Fitness Professional. In today’s economy it can be tougher than ever to make ends meet as a fitness professional. We have developed programming to give you a financial boost and a competitive marketing edge. Whether you are a new group exercise instructor, program manager, independent personal trainer or small-business owner, you will find sessions to help you build success and revenue!

Nutrition, Food and Metabolism. When your students and clients make healthier fitness choices, they also start thinking about nutrition—and have questions. While it is outside your scope of practice to render dietary advice, you are certainly in a position to educate. The 2010 IDEA World Fitness Convention program brings you the most up-to-date information and scientific research in food science, metabolism, healthy eating, protein supplementation and much, much more.

Indoor Cycling. After all these years on the scene, indoor cycling is still hot! And it’s not just for group exercise instructors anymore—more personal trainers have added indoor cycling to their sessions. For the first time, IDEA is proud to offer four different cycling programs, which are bound to satisfy the most die-hard cycling expert or enthusiast. Whether you are a new cycling instructor or a seasoned veteran, you won’t want to miss the latest information on bike fit, class design, cycling technology and specialized training protocols.

Athletic and Sports Conditioning. If you are a trainer who works with athletes—kids or adults, amateur or professional—you are constantly challenged to find new ways to keep clients motivated, engaged and at the top of their game. This year’s IDEA World Fitness program offers an expanded variety of innovative techniques and ideas to help your clients excel at competitive sports and performance activities.

Aging and Older Adults. We’re all getting older! There is so much to learn—and teach—about how our bodies change with time and how we can help people maintain fitness and optimal functionality in everyday life. Whether you work with older adults in a group exercise, personal training or mind-body setting, you will discover safe, effective new ways to assess clients and approach age-related issues and conditions.
