California choreographer and hip-hop innovator Milo Levell had been a presenter at fitness conferences in Italy, Russia, Japan and China but had never presented in “his own backyard” until last year’s IDEA World Fitness Convention in San Diego.
“My experience at IDEA was amazing. Talk about inspiration—the air was filled with it! It was so beautiful to see people of all different backgrounds, cultures, spiritual beliefs and professions coming together to share the importance of fitness in our lives and the idea that no matter who you are, there is something out there to inspire you to get up and get fit. There was something at the convention for everyone: dance, exercise with a ball, boot camps, equipment workouts, body-mind-spirit training, business seminars, hands-on workshops, everything! You can start a new fitness career, find new people to collaborate with, or just get inspired by all the new moves, programs, classes, research and information. Then you get to take it all back home and inspire your students and clients.”
This year Levell is coming back to the 2008 IDEA World Fitness Convention to inspire attendees with hot new hip-hop moves and secrets for running a successful hip-hop/funk class.
Another internationally known presenter who will be at the 2008 World Fitness Convention, Darren Jacobson—franchise personal training manager for Virgin Active South Africa—believes that the inspiration you get at the IDEA World Fitness Convention isn’t just energizing—it’s necessary to stay current and competitive.
“The only way for fitness professionals to stay cutting-edge in such a dynamic industry is to challenge, question and explore. You can’t be complacent and get into a comfort zone, or you will get left behind. IDEA events are just the catalyst you need to propel you forward and ahead of the pack. It’s a fantastic opportunity to listen to industry leaders, network with like-minded colleagues and experience the latest fitness technology firsthand.”
Ignite Your Power to Inspire
“We chose the theme of ‘Inspire’ for our convention in 2008 because people around the world are more in need of inspiration than ever before,” says Kathie Davis, co-founder and executive director of IDEA. “People need inspiration to get more active, eat more healthfully, handle their stress in more effective ways and help their family and friends get healthier, too. Every one of our members has the power to inspire new attitudes and behavior, but we all need a spark sometimes—a new idea, a new skill, a new piece of information or way of looking at things. At this convention, fitness professionals are going to find the inspiration they need to take back to their clients and classes, and to schools and workplaces in their communities.”
At the 2008 World Fitness Convention, there are going to be enough sparks of inspiration to set the world on fire: 260-plus sessions of the most exciting new programs, research and trends from around the globe, with more than half being presented for the first time. Over 100 presenters will be featured at the fitness event, including the experts driving the industry’s most important current directions, as well as rising-star leaders and personalities who are shaping the future. Thousands of people from about 60 countries will come together for the fitness event, which will be held in Las Vegas, internationally known for its entertainment, world-class accommodations and affordability.
“The comment I hear most from attendees after they’ve been to the IDEA World Fitness Convention is that they’re going home with more than a year’s worth of new information and ideas to use with their clients and students,” says Aprile Peishel, MA, IDEA director of fitness event programming. “Attendees also rave about the great experiences they have [as a result of] networking at the convention. A lot of great relationships are forged: friendships, business partnerships, even businesses. Finally, everyone talks about how much fun they have. The professional benefits are amazing, but sometimes the best part is that you get to take a break from your busy schedule at home and just have a great time.”

Take a Chance—and Change Your Future
The way to get the most benefit from the IDEA World Fitness Convention is to take some risks, says Peishel. “I think you get the most inspiration when you try sessions that are new and different, outside of your realm of comfort, and experience new formats or styles, or take lectures on topics you’ve never tried before. It just opens up your mind. I know that any time I go to a clinic or a workshop outside my area of expertise, I feel humbled at how much I don’t know—but I also get inspired by knowing there’s so much more to learn out there.”

AHG represents the partnership between the William J. Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association.
A special representative of the AHG will present an award at the convention to an outstanding IDEA fitness professional. In addition, there will be a special session to outline how IDEA members can participate in IDEA’s global campaign with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.
