The Art of the Blend

While we strive for content balance when planning each issue of Fitness Journal, every so often we seem to assemble a collection of articles which—just by a quick scan of the table of contents—looks like a heck of a lot of fun to learn from. Welcome to one of those issues! With the weather turning cooler and the earlier sunsets giving you a reason to hunker down in late afternoon, perhaps now is a good time to brew a cup of tea, curl up in your favorite chair and enjoy the magazine, which you continue to name as your most valued IDEA member benefit.

Here is a sampling of what the editors have created for you in this issue.

Meal Timing and Daily Calories

Quick poll: How many of you have a friend, family member or client whose eating style is either grazing on small bites of food all day or fasting intermittently? Perhaps you regularly practice or have dabbled in one of these over the past few years. All of the noise has created a mythology around the “right” way to eat, according to author Michelle Alencar, PhD.

She gets to the heart of the matter in the CEC feature “Myths and Realities of Nibbling, Fasting and Feasting” by looking beyond opinions to the science (or lack thereof) that can drive a cogent decision on whether or not these are practical and sustainable approaches. Once you weigh the evidence, you’ll be empowered to confidently discuss the general health relevance of meal frequency and fasting with your clients.

Have You Had the Bone Health Talk With Your Active Agers?

You may get a lot of questions from clients about diet, but likely not as many about osteoporosis. Most people will naturally gravitate to asking about what they can see on the outside of their bodies—leaner abs, bigger muscles, better posture—and focus less on what’s going on inside. Therein lies the challenge with the topic of bone health.

With 54 million adult Americans at risk of break┬¡ing a bone, it’s wise to equip yourself to steer clients safely around osteoporosis with knowledge of preventive programming and coaching them through an osteoporosis diagnosis with sound information and strategy. Your solid guidance on exercise, sleep and vitamin D intake can help your clients to maintain their bone density and regain confidence in their abilities. Good communication with their healthcare provider will also make you a valuable partner as you collaborate on your clients’ care plans.
