Look up from Lockdown

People need time-tested, professional fitness inspiration.

Look up from lockdown

The lockdown created a new space to explore, and there’s somber news, good news and great news trending among fitness consumers amid the pandemic roller coaster. Personal trainers, group fitness instructors and fitness entrepreneurs are ready to meet movement-hungry people wherever they are on the path to health, wellness and happiness.

Recent industry data reveal that after a decade of regular revenue growth, the fitness industry lost a staggering $29.2 billion from March 2020 through June 2021. That’s a 52% decline from 2019 (IHRSA 2021). This, of course, was due to COVID-19 lockdowns, which blindsided the entire industry and reset the business landscape. Since this was a novel challenge and there were initially few options to sustain revenue while gyms were shuttered, these numbers—while sober—aren’t surprising.

However, clients and participants truly miss their custom-designed personal training sessions and depression-busting fitness classes, with 95% of gym-goers saying they pined over at least one aspect of going to their favorite health club in person (IHRSA 2021). While virtual offerings helped fill the physical activity gap and kept people somewhat active at home, of more than 2,000 people in the United States, nearly half now intend to return to their fitness facilities over the next 6-12 months (IHRSA 2021). Fitness professionals are poised to recapture and renew educated movement as a way to sustain ongoing physical and mental well-being—not to mention exercise’s role in boosting immunity, a salient topic in today’s world.
