Husband-and-wife team Bruce and Kym Burke enjoy giving back to their community. Two years ago, the co-owners of One on One Fitness in State College, Pennsylvania, started a fundraising event called “Give Back,” in which 100% of proceeds would be given to two local charities. The proceeds are derived from the organization’s group training program and lecture series. Also, “in lieu of the standard holiday gifts our clients give their trainers, [clients] make a donation in their trainer’s name, and we give the money to the trainers in the form of a year-end bonus,” say the Burkes. In 2010, the Give Back campaign raised $17,500. The campaign has also become an effective marketing tool through increased traffic and referrals, marketing from charities, media recognition and more.
