Unity has never been more important than now for the fitness industry. It’s imperative that fitness colleagues, managers, programmers, group fitness instructors, personal trainers, studio and facility owners, and enthusiasts come together for a positive exchange of proven best practices and innovative discoveries in fitness careers. All of this will happen at 2021 IDEA World Virtual, July 9–11. Join other aspirational fitness pros who share your passion, vision and commitment—and yet have diverse experiences and perspectives—as you spark group action to create a more thriving and united fitness industry.
“We’ve chosen ‘United We Thrive’ as our theme for IDEA World Virtual and as our internal mantra for the coming year,” says Amy Thompson, vice president and general manager of IDEA Health & Fitness Association. “To be united means to work in harmony with togetherness and inclusivity. We represents our fitness community as we come together with new solutions to solve new and old challenges. To thrive suggests we’ve endured hardship and are now looking to the immense opportunity that change brings.”
A Gift for IDEAfit+ Members
IDEA World Virtual delivers on industry needs for up-to-date, high-level education while remodeling our boundaries and global reach as we remain physically distanced. However, in 2021, attending an event of this size and caliber may be cost-prohibitive due to the financial strain brought on by the pandemic. As a gift and thank-you to those doing everything they can to continue to Inspire the World to Fitness®, we are giving anyone with an IDEAfit+ membership complimentary access to 2021 IDEA World Virtual.
“We can’t think of a better way to unite our industry than to extend our world-class event to all of IDEAfit+ Members,” Thompson says. “We feel it is imperative that we support our members in this challenging time by providing the tools, support and community they need to thrive.”

Fitness Fit for All
Are your fitness offerings truly inclusive and welcoming to everyone? There are plenty of opportunities to do better and reach a more diverse group of people, but it’s not just about making your services available to them. Vernā Myers, American activist and author, couldn’t have put it better: “Diversity is being invited to the party. Inclusion is being asked to dance.®”
Reach more people in your fitness career by dissecting biases, diversifying offerings, improving representation and making your overall business inclusive. Learn how to do that in sessions like “Classes for the Masses,” led by 2020 IDEA Fitness Leader of the Year Tricia Murphy Madden. She states, “The statistics for group fitness currently stand at 78% female and 21% male with no statistics for nonbinary, which tells us group fitness has an opportunity to grow simply by speaking to all gender populations. It’s no longer time to try to be inclusive; it’s time to be inclusive.”
Engage in thought-provoking, action-stirring, socially inclusive business sessions like “Use and Promote Inclusive Language as a Business Leader,” presented by health and wellness educator and chair of IDEA’s Equity & Inclusion Committee, Katrina Pilkington. “Inclusive language can impact how many clients are served versus how many are not reached nor feel they belong in the in-person or online fitness space,” says Pilkington. “Truly creating an inclusive coaching awareness is the key to ensuring that service happens for the key demographic needing access to health and fitness.”
Pilkington will provide solid action plans to help you get clear on how and why to exemplify the highest levels of inclusive practices in all fitness careers.
Communication That Transcends Borders
One of the greatest successes and challenges in the fitness industry this past year has been the extraordinary shift in effective means of communication. Fitness professionals need to be adept at utilizing various methods of communicating, not only to deliver messages, but actually to reach people. In the session “Customer Service in the Digital Age,” Fred Hoffman, MEd, veteran presenter and the 2007 IDEA Fitness Instructor of the Year, will compare and contrast the best in-person and virtual communication styles and how to personalize them to efficiently deliver top-notch customer service in all of its forms.
“Businesses must take inventory of how well all of their ‘channels’ (in-person, website, social media, telephone, etc.) are performing and determine if customers are receiving the same level of customer service from each one of them,” says Hoffman.

“Although I truly miss the energy of live fitness conferences, I am learning other ways to make an impact,” says Irene McCormick, MS, 2018 IDEA Fitness Instructor of the Year. “Sessions are even more personalized, and the ability to follow up and offer authentic feedback is amazing!”
Leslee Bender, 2020 IDEA Personal Trainer of the Year and director of I Am Ageless Now™, insists that virtual events are necessary, as they offer access to high-level education to everyone, not just those in specific geographic areas.
Bender says, “It is extremely important to offer a virtual alternative for those who would otherwise not be able to attend and to give them the opportunity to learn in the technological world.”
Here are more benefits of attending virtual events:
- Avoid travel costs.
- Stay home and safe.
- Learn from anywhere.
