You briefly said to avoid some exercises. What exercises should you avoid if someone has neck pain?
I’m am trying to understand better when to use these exercises and when it would not be helpful. I have clients who have shoulder issues. I want to be sure I pick the right exercises for the right issue. Also, the issue of neck pain came up when I tried some of these exercises. So therefore should we avoid those?
No exercise should cause pain. If someone experiences pain from any movement or exercise, they need to consult their physician before continuing the movement. It sounds to me that you do not have the knowledge or experience to be working with clients who have pain or movement issues. I would recommend taking courses and finding more information on such issues. You can work with these types of clients as part of the education process, but you need to be directed and do more studying in order to be able to evaluate such issues and determine how to proceed, ie. prrogram design, progress, regress, adjust, etc.
Without the client in front of me for an assessment/evaluation, I could not begin to make recommendation to address musculoskeletal issuses.
All good points in this thread… Just one to add.
If you believe that the neck pain is due to a medical condition then either the person will have a diagnosis / clearance from a medical professional or they will not. If they have clearance, you can follow any guidance given from the doctor or therapist. It is beyond scope of practice for a trainer to prescribe specific exercises for a medical condition.
Hello Maureen Fletcher,
Yes, you want to get the advice of doctor and physical therapist. See if you can find out if correcting posture during the day will help. Also, have the client move slowly when trying something new to prevent injury; stopping before the pain is felt.
I agree with avoiding overhead moves and try to keep the scapula set; proper posture helps, but may be deviated.

Thank you all for your responses. I had just watched a video seminar on Scapular Stability: Shoulder the Load with Brian Richey. I thought the question box was going to go to him.
During the seminar someone asked a question about the exercises and neck pain but the person didn’t have a microphone. So I was hoping he could clarify it for me.
Thanks again.
