where could I get training to be a personal trainer or exercise coach inNorth Dakota
Check out the above ACE links and Wellcoaches http://www.wellcoachesschool.com/?page=homepage. However most coaching training requires some previous knowledge base that you may get through personal training certs.
if you are looking for hands on or actual instruction versus self study then I offer online tutorial via video conferencing to prepare you for your exam and to teach you the nuances of personal training and working with clients to help you become a competent and qualified personal trainer.

Cari,
If you are wanting a certification there are many online programs that allow self study. If you are wanting a college degree I know that Minot State University, University of Mary in Bismarck, and NDSU all offer Exercise Science programs. Lake Region State College in Devil’s Lake is now offering a 2 year Fitness Trainer Technician degree as well. It is harder to find local workshops. I know that AFAA and NETA come to ND occasionally.
What I would highly recommend is if you are looking to work within a certain city or a specific club – call and ask what they recommend/require. Some clubs in the state will allow you to apprentice while studying for your certification. I am in Bismarck and know that my clubs (Snap Fitness) only want an accreditted (NCCA) certification. While another club in the same town requires NASM. If you are looking to work for yourself really just look into as many NCCA accreditted progarms as possible and find the one who’s price, CEC process, testing process and philosophy you agree with most.
Hope this helps a little. Any more questions let me know I will gladly help!
