When you teach a step cardio class is it safe to JUMP-DANCE swivel-and turn like crazy or STEPPIN for all your students that are
it depends on the students in the class….if they have been taking the class for along time and build up to it….maybe….but know your class…and if there a new people maybe save it for another day….BUT…. PROGRESSIONS are the key and MODIFICATIONS are also the key….
you need to be able to teach a very base beginning and build up from there giving everyone the option to stay with the basic pattern or go somewhere in between until you reach the final pattern…and certainly if you cannot break it down to the simplest pattern…skip it….until you can…
you need to think of a recipe in cooking…you don’t end up with a cake without all the ingredients….
so be safe…know your clientele…know how to break it down and build it up…good luck…:)
Hello Dimitris,
I think it is okay to jump, dance, turn and swivel/pivot while instructing a step class. However, as you mention in your question, it is very important that the class be safe, the bpm not reach unsafe speeds and be based on current exercise science as it relates to step. What is also important is that the transitions are well taught and performed in a fluid manner.
I’ve taught Reebok Power step where jumps, jacks and hops were used, taught classes where I’ve implemented step/floor combinations to make the class more fun.
Every step instructor has their own style of teaching and the participants generally frequent classes where the choreography is most appealing to them.
The bottom line for me is that the classes safe and fun.
Thanks for your question.
