For both the upper chest is ideal, but if it’s an inch higher or lower it doesn’t really matter (everyone is build little different). What I tell my clients when they are performing this exercise is to keep about a 90-degree angle between their biceps and forearms to avoid using too much triceps (if less than 90 degrees) or put to much strain on their shoulders (if wider than 90 degrees).
90 degrees. Some friends of mine will put a water bottle under their shirt, and when the bar reaches that point the push up.
