I stopped giving referral incentives to clients a long time ago. My dentist doesn’t do these types of things, nor my doctor or massage therapist, etc.
I do give my clients unlimited access to my knowledge and advice while we work together. I give my time and assistance to a number of local health and fitness initiatives, charities, and so on.
I refer friends and clients to other services that I have found to be of high quality. I don’t expect the business that replaced my water heater to come back out and give me some free services when someone I referred to them gets a new water heater.
If you feel the need to do this or if you need to attract more clients, then follow your instincts. But be careful. Clients who didn’t tell thier referral to mention this was a referral or who didn’t actually refer the client, but knew them, have gotten very upset about not getting a referral bonus when I used to do this. And some felt that thier referral perk wasn’t as good as a new perk being offered, etc.
