while I do not discount the enjoyment derived from having attained goals of health and fitness, I strongly believe that we should not postpone being happy until such time that we have reached those goals. It can be a motivation for some to imagine a life of health and fitness and may help overcome the occasional obstacle.
But I believe that the journey is as important as the destination, and I try to coach my clients to be happy where they are, even if it is with extra weight, stiffness and lack of fitness. I think this is a better point of departure.
Life is a journey, just as obtaining fitness goals.
Challenging is a subjective word, I find it rewarding!
It’s all about your attitude and mindset: Working out and reaching my goals will never end, it’s an ongoing life choice for me, there is no finite to “reaching my goals”.
I think a key reason so many people yo yo and fail with “diets” and exercise programs is because they think of it as “once I’m done I don’t have to do this anymore!” Or once I reach my goal I will be happy. Reaching a fitness goal just means another goal is around the corner!
Enjoy your journey
One should always operate with purpose, that’s life. I don’t think you can stand atop the mountain and shout “am done”. You climb then look for another mountain, that’s life.
Climb – To ascend or rise.
Reach – To come to or arrive at in some course of progress, action, etc.
Achieve – To bring about an intended result; accomplish some purpose or effect.
Hi Cherie. I’m a true believer in the saying that “life is a journey, not a destination.” I love setting and achieving goals in life – it gives my life purpose. That being said, I think that in the area of health and fitness, achieving and maintaining it is truly a “journey,” as how we do that, and how we define that, changes as we age. What I think is truly the satisfying part of that pursuit is what comes with it. By pursuing health and fitness throughout our lives, it opens up a world of possibilities as to our ability to enjoy other pursuits. It’s truly sad to see someone who, through inactivity has prematurely become less mobile, less vivacious, and unable to perform even simple day-to-day tasks. By pursuing the goal of wellness, fitness and health, we enable ourselves to enjoy the many simple pleasures that life offers us everyday.

I try to teach that everyday can be enjoyed at every stage of life. Setting goals is great, but don’t forget to appreciate today. And there will be tough days, tough days make the good days better and the great days greater. Realizing that you are ready to healthier and then making changes is important. But becoming responsible for your own happiness is more rewarding. And being able to do both is a day to day part of living.
