What type of exercise is most effective for weight loss – strength training or cardio?
Hi Shelley,
Strength training vs. cardio: who wins?
I would say that strength training is more effective in the long run*.
Cardio only allows high calorie expenditure during the activity. Resistance training involves a certain level of calorie expenditure after the activity ends as the body repairs itself.
Intervals can burn more calories than steady state cardio BUT do you want to use intervals with a beginner or someone who thinks cardio is their Kryptonite?
In cardio’s defense, someone can train to the point where intervals are effective but the adaptation could take a while and may turn people off.
Weights can be modified so that beginners develop form.
*This does not mean that cardio doesn’t work! Cardio can assist in weight loss but weights have a certain advantage.
Hello,
Both! I would have them do strength training and cardio. You could also have them do a lot of circuit training with the resistance exercises so they are getting cardio at the same time. I would include a lot of HIIT training with the type of cardio that they enjoy. Last but not least if they want to lose weight have them consult a dietitian as 80% of the workout is in the kitchen. Good luck!
