What three exercises are contraindicated with a client who had a standard RTC repair?
Overhead press-Correct
Painful arc is not an exercise
Empty cans will strengthen the supraspinatus-incorrect
The other two exercises are:
Lat pulldowns biomechanically when the elbow is at 90 degrees and the movement is on the downward phase, this places maximal stress on the superior/middle and inferior glenohumeral ligament first, teres minor & infraspinatus are concentrically contracting placing excessive stress on the GH joint and the surgical site as well as on the labrum.
The third is upright rows which will impinge the humeral head into the AC joint and place both compressive and distractive loads to the surgically repaired site.
Also, chest flyes past 90 degrees will place excessive tension on subscapularis which will indirectly
load the bicep tendo due to it’s anatomical insertion which could irritate the shoulder.
