I’m vegan, and in the process of loosing body fat, i’ve decided to try soy protein powder because i just can’t reach my daily protein goal. So i have a few questions, first is it ok to drink protein shakes 3-4 times a week? Can i eat a little something while drinking a protein shake? (Like one slice of whole wheat bread with a teaspoon of natural peanut butter or sugar free jam)
I plan to consider these calories as a part of the amount of calories i should eat in a day. I’ll appreciate any advice you can give me 🙂
I would say yes, it’s ok to drink a protein shake 3-4 times a week. There are other plant based protein powders out there: pea, rice, and hemp protein, as well as egg protein if you eat egg. Best would be to use a variety to get more nutrients and amino acids. And yes, it’s certainly ok to eat other foods along with the shake. I’d use a healthier, more nutrient rich nut butter like walnut or almond. Another option is using almond milk in the shake. I promote fruit only spreads rather than those with artificial sweeteners.
My suggestion for you is to have your protein shake with 1 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk with 2-3 strawberries or a handful of blueberries with 1 tea-spoon of peanut butter or almond butter. That’s all you need in a good healthy-vegan protein shake. Rich in healthy fat, carbs and protein. And as long as it is not a meal substitute you can have it 3-4 times a week.
Best in Health,
The previous two answers are spot on. That protein shake is fine 3-4 times per week with the almond milk and extras with it. You can make it more nutrient rich by blending those items with a nut butter, spinach/kale, chia seeds, a banana, cinnamon and ice for a tasty smoothie.
Also, depending on the intensity of your workouts, you may want to put additional focus towards your post-workout meal. Even if your goal is weight/fat loss, ingesting the right nutrients immediately following exercise proves incredibly beneficial for your recovery process (where results are achieved) by kick-starting muscle repair, energy replenishment and fat loss.
Hope this helps and keep up the hard work
