what role does the peroneal musculature play in stability during stance phase?
According to the text “Kinesiology of the Musculoskeletal System written by Donald A. Neumann, the stance phase (which takes up 60% of the gait cycle) is from “right heel contact to right toe off.” Obviously this occurs on both the left and right side.
“The isolated function of the peroneal musculature is to plantarflex and evert the foot concentrically. Its integrated function is the deceleration of ankle dorsiflexion and to isometrically stabilize the foot and anklex complex.” (Taken from NASM Essential of Corrective Exercise).
During heel contact, the peroneals are decelerating ankle dorsiflexion, midstance the pereoneals are isometrically stabilizing the foot and ankle, and during toe off the peroneals are concentrically contracting to toe off.
