My answer that I gave earlier was assuming that you were not an employee or a private contractor hired by the gym you’re at. But if you are, then don’t listen to me! I have no idea what the typical split is for employees or PC’s. Where I live, many gyms allow trainers to use their facilities for negotiated fees, basically just to get new members. Some gyms simply charge a flat monthly fee to outside trainers, regardless of the number of clients they train. Whatever your situation is, negotiate the best deal you can.
I’ve seen a lot of variety.
At one place I’ve seen, the trainers get only 30% to 40%, depending on their sales, which sounds really low but the hourly charge for trainers was quite spendy at that boutique firm, plus all types of sales (memberships, training, small group training, seminar attendance fees, apparel, foam rollers…..) counted towards their sales base for determining %.
At other places, the rate is higher, around 50-60% for the trainer, but these tend to be bigger box gyms where the hourly training rates are pretty low.
At a studio where I’ve worked, it’s exactly 50% and we put in 50% of the effort together (marketing).
