I think you might have a valid argument for getting paid if you are an employee and they required that you attend that specific CPR training.
If they just said that you have to have CPR certification, and they held it at their gym but didn’t require you to attend that specific class, then they did you a favor by offering the convenience of having it at your facility.
those law would be on state level but I have never heard of such requirement. In order to maintain a current certification, you need to have CPR/AID whether employed by a club or not. Some clubs may pay for it but most will likely not. They may argue that they are already paying you for your time, even if it is at minimum wage.

Anything worth doing right is worth the price. Also, the instructors would like to be paid for their time and education which is not free for them.
As a trainer, we need to be CPR certified to train others professionally. I work as an independent contractor and pay for my cpr training in order to maintain my personal/health/group training status. All my business expenses are tax deductible.
You are most likely responsible for your cpr cert costs. You may be able to make a deal with the health club in the form of a group discount. You also have the option of shopping around.
