As there is a big amount of new devices coming on the market in the last months, I am looking for some feedback from the field about these: the bodybugg, the fitbug, the basis watch the suunto ehanced heartrate monitors etc. If one wanted to truly measure some critical parameters for dlients, which are the best ones doe you think?
I understand you point of view Bryant. We live in a culture of measurement and competition….. Again, I think this is very much dependent on what type of client and what type of objective.
For weightloss and lifestyle adaptation it is proven that awareness of behavior and regular correction is very beneficial.
For performance athletes there are other key parameters to monitor. If you are serious about moving forward towards you goal than these devices are useful… I would say in fact they are best combined with the help of the trainer/coach who can help the client understand what is happening and how to interpret and use the numbers.
It should help us develop the profession.
One more reason why a good forum in ideafit would be very helpful… to separate fad from function….
I’ve used both the Body Media system and FitBit. I like them both for different reasons. My clients have had success with both. The Fitbit is nice because it is small. Body Media, on the other hand, is noticeable when worn which can be a negative but is more accurate in calculating calorie expenditure. Good article on new gadgets – link below
I recently got the Fitbit One and really have fun using it. That thing is even motivating ME 🙂
When people try to lose weight, I usually preach about the importance of keeping a food diary, often with very limited success. The app enables people to enter the data right there and then which is very helpful.
I also like the sleep tracker function. Even though far from perfect it gives people more information about the quality of their sleep than they would otherwise get.
Hi Karin and others,
Sorry have been very busy and only now circling back to this topic.
Focusing on the high performance athlete and serious amateur that is being coached / trained. The SUUNTO t6 watch/HRM was bundled with cool software from Firstbeat Technologies. This software is very advanced in that it can measure VO2Max, VO2 at regular intervals, Ventilation, and most importantly EPOC as well as recovery from stress (due to exercise and other factors) during night time sleep.
Now this software is also available and compatible with Polar and other watches… which is great…. the only downside is that it is PC only and I am no longer using PC’s (Have been on Mac since the last 7 years and won’t go back ever…)
Does anybody know of other software for Mac that can do this is or better ? This is very interesting stuff to be able to maximize training prescription and verify and feedback recovery into that prescription.
