It has been recommended that I pursue a balance exercise/improvement routine to help with an old (30 years) LCL level one ( torn ligament) issue that nows gives me trouble while hiking. Now the other ( and never endured) knee is showing signs of LCL pain. What would you suggest for a home remedy program. O yeah and I am 66 years old. In good shape otherwise.
making recommendations site unseen are always problematic, in large part because there is not one ‘correct solution’. The reason is that there is a body attached to that LCL which – at 66 years of age – probably developed a lot of compensation.
Having said all that, I usually look at the hip when somebody has knee pain, and I find often that the lateral hip stabilizers (gluteus medius) need work. This often seems to go hand in hand with tightness of the inner thigh muscles. There are a lot of exercises on the internet for ‘gluteus medius’ and ‘myofascial release inner thigh’. Those exercises are usually beneficial even if they are not addressing your specific problem.
I would not dawdle too long before going to see a doctor or physical therapist, though. I assume you enjoy staying active, and you need to rule out other problems with the knees.
