Foam rolling or Self-Myofascial Release is a flexibility technique that focuses on neural and fascial systems in the body. It concentrates on alleviating myofascial trigger points and areas of hyper-irritability located within a band of muscle. This form of stretching incorporates the concept of autogenic inhibition to improve self tissue extensibility. -NASM CES definition
I use foam rolling and other forms of SMR with most my clients. There are contraindictions and a precise method, so make sure you fully understand the concept before “rolling” anyone. I often see foam rolling overused and in ways that could cause serious damage, espcially on the back areas.
do I ever use foam rollers! They are one of the cornerstones of the MELT Method (Myofascial Energetic Length Technique). The ones used in MELT are of a softer structure and are used in a variety of ways: sometimes positionally where they are used to create a surface from which to lengthen; and sometimes as devices to roll over and manipulate connective tissue. I have more information about MELT on my own web site, and there is also the web site for the MELT method itself www.meltmethod.com.
